2 Stars Great, until the CD player stops working
I loved this player for all the reasons the positive reviewers mentioned, and even now I like the parts of it that still work.
However, after several months — long enough for the unit to go out of warranty — the CD player stopped accepting CDs. It ejects all CDs — not only defective ones, but ALL. There’s nothing in the troubleshooting documentation or on the Philips website that deals with the problem. A properly used CD player should last more than nine months, I would think.

I bought this product so I could play my ipod in my kitchen. I had an older, huge stereo system that took up so much space on my counters, and this product is great. I wanted something with a radio, cd player, as well as ipod capabilities. For the price, the sound is really good. I’m very glad I made this purchase.
4 Stars Looks great, sound is decent, what we’ve been looking for
Got everything you ever need to play music with (USB port, CD, and ipod, FM/AM Tuner). Sound is pretty decent for a small unit. Can’t expect large speaker sounds though since it starts to have distortion if you turn up past mid-level. Good for easy listening at night. Remote is a plus.
4 Stars Exactly what I was looking for
I have a 5-CD stereo system in my office and I enjoy being able to listen to songs in a random order while I work, but I wanted something smaller and less elaborate in my bedroom. So I went looking for a radio/mp3/cd player that would enable me to listen to the songs on my non-iPod mp3 player randomly.
That’s exactly what I found in the Philips DCM230/37. With my mp3 device plugged in to the USB connector, I can shuffle either among all songs or within a specific folder/album, and I can of course also shuffle on a CD. Although I’m no audiophile, I think the quality of the sound is great for such a small system. The radio reception is great, and I’m all set if I ever decide to get an iPod. Although this is not an alarm clock, it does have the ability to set a timer to turn the system on at a specific time so you can wake up listening to the radio, cd, mp3 or other auxiliary device.
Which brings me to one of my minor gripes: When the timer is set, the system turns on at a volume level about three times higher than my normal level. Prepare for a heart attack!! But, since I wasn’t looking for an alarm clock, I just don’t use this feature. I also wish the front of the system was a little more matte (it’s very shiny). But overall, I love this system. It’s exactly what I was looking for.
